Disney Announces Release Dates for Animated Sequels: 'Frozen 3', 'Zootopia 2', and 'Toy Story 5'

During the Walt Disney Company's public 2024 Q1 earnings report, CEO Bob Iger revealed the official theatrical release dates for Disney's upcoming animated movies. The movies, sequels to fan-favorite Disney animated films Frozen, Zootopia, and Toy Story, are all scheduled to be released within the next three years. 'Zootopia 2' will be released on November 26th, 2025, 'Frozen 3' on November 25th, 2026, and 'Toy Story 5' on July 19th, 2026.

'Zootopia 2', releasing next year, almost ten years after its preceding film, is expected to be Disney's most highly-anticipated and highest-grossing film of 2025, no doubt internationally as well. Last December, Shanghai Disneyland opened an immersive 'Zootopia' themed land complete with exciting themed attractions, character meet-and-greets, shopping, food, and a colorful skyline meant to replicate the bustling city of Zootopia from the beloved 2016 film. The land has been extremely well-received by international Disney fans and will likely contribute to 'Zootopia 2's global box office performance. I couldn't be more excited to watch this film as 'Zootopia' is one of my favorite Disney animated movies of all time. Unfortunately, I missed the opportunity to watch the original film in theaters. However, the cutting-edge animation and brilliant storytelling have me returning to Disney+ to rewatch this entertaining film at least once a month.

'Frozen 3,' while more highly-anticipated than both 'Zootopia 2' and 'Toy Story 5,' is a film I am a little skeptical of. Undoubtedly, it will perform well at the box office with a large, dedicated fan base, a Thanksgiving break release date, and considerable appeal for both kids and parents. However, following the phenomenal story of 'Frozen 2', it leads me to wonder if producing a third 'Frozen' sequel is necessary for the characters' story and world-building or if Disney is merely capitalizing on the franchise due to its popularity. Either way, much like 'Zootopia 2', I can not wait to watch this animated film. If you know me, you know I love to tell the story of how 'Frozen' was the first movie I ever watched in theaters. Anna and Elsa are two of my favorite Disney characters, and I honestly just want the production team to do justice to the beloved sisters.

Lastly, and probably the least anticipated movie of the upcoming three, Toy Story 5 has presented me with many of the same concerns as Frozen 3. I can't help but feel like Disney is milking the franchise's nostalgia for monetary purposes. Following the disappointing performance of the Pixar film 'Lightyear' in 2022, this may be Disney's attempt at revisiting and revitalizing the 'Toy Story' franchise. While many fans are excited at the upcoming return of Woody, Buzz, Jesse, and the rest of the 'Toy Story' gang, others, myself included, believe it may be time for Pixar's oldest and most beloved franchise to be laid to rest.

As the release dates for these upcoming sequels approach, more information regarding the details of these films will be released. I couldn't be more excited to see the return and continuation of some of my favorite Disney characters' stories. Of course, with sequels comes the possibility of the introduction of some new and exciting characters as well. My only hope is that the return of three of some of Disney's most beloved and successful franchises will usher in the revitalization of the Walt Disney Company's positive reputation.
