Star Wars: Tales of the Empire Trailer Announcement

In a surprise twist, instead of announcing a season 2 for the fan-favorite animated Star Wars series Tales of the Jedi, Lucasfilm just announced the upcoming release of their six-episode series Tales of the Empire! The series will feature the exciting return of infamous Star Wars villains like Grand Admiral Thrawn, General Grievous, the Grand Inquisitor, and Clone Wars characters like Jedi Barriss Offee, and release on May 4th for Star Wars Day!

On April 4th, Disney and Lucasfilm unexpectedly released the official trailer for Tales of the Empire across all their media accounts, much to the excitement and relief of Star Wars fans everywhere. With The Bad Batch wrapping up in less than a month, many fans were expectantly awaiting an announcement from Lucasfilm Animation regarding their upcoming projects, especially after rumors began circulating last year that the studio was planning to close. In light of the rumors, the Director of Cinematography, Joel Aron, of Lucasfilm Animation, tweeted, "Lucasfilm Animation is not closing, FYI." While Joel's statement assured Star Wars fans that the studio has no current plans to close its doors, no official announcements had been made regarding any upcoming projects the studio had planned. That is, until the recent announcement of Tales of the Empire.

As a lover of Star Wars animation, I couldn't be more excited about this upcoming series. The return of Grand Admiral Thrawn and the more recently introduced Ahsoka character Morgan Elsbeth make me enthusiastic about this six-episode series' story and what it could mean for the live-action characters' return in season 2 of Ahsoka, which is set to begin filming later this year. Additionally, the unexpected return of Bariss Offee should explain her disappearance following the end of the Clone Wars and her survival following Order 66. I'm particularly enjoying how Lucasfilm is leaning more into the darker side of the Empire, which wasn't established to the fullest extent in the live-action Star Wars movie saga. The Bad Batch series is doing an excellent job of delving into these darker themes. While it's a little unsettling, it's expanding the Star Wars universe and giving fans a better backstory into the overly corrupt and barbaric side of the Empire that George Lucas originally envisioned for his Star Wars films.

Overall, Tales of the Empire should be an exciting journey into the backstory of some exciting newer characters and feature the return of several fan favorites. Based on the trailer footage alone, this series's animation, coloring, and cinematography already look incredible. I'm eagerly awaiting May 4th to watch this six-episode series, and I'll most likely be binge-watching the whole thing in one day. If you'd like to watch the exciting trailer, click the link below!
